Today was... | Galentine's Day
Valentine's Day. Not a public holiday anywhere, but is nonetheless celebrated around the world by the romantically involved, loved-up and coupley. And I spent it with Caitlin, my Galentine. Isn't she cute.
Seeing as we live in a student house of six, all of whom have their significant other at university, we wanted out. Avoid all the couples we said. Shut their cuteness out we said. So we coupled up ourselves.
Gifting each other with presents and Valentine's Day cards, we met up at Caffè Nero to share a beautiful dinner of a mozzarella and tomato panini, a hot chocolate (or hot chocolate milano if you're fancypants Caitlin) and a slice of cake. We opted out of additionally getting crisps however, after our experience in second year when we ate our body weight in calories so couldn't move for the rest of the day except to host a funeral for our bank accounts after realising how much we'd spent.
We were sat in the corner of the coffee shop, and kept receiving looks from the group of three behind me who clearly were envious of our seats and were plotting our elimination.
From my faux-partner for the day, I received some knee length shorts that I am a fan of, a flat cap which I am also a fan of, a Caffè Nero gift card - how apt, and some chocolates in the shape of hearts. I also gave her a selection of gifts including flowers which poked out of the gift bag, leaving me on the receiving end of many an inquisitive look on the way there. You could say we're big fans of this Galentine's thing, or you could say that we try to hard. Either works.
After we motioned to exit and our seats were pounced upon by the threesome behind, we then continued on to have a semi-romantic stroll around Lincoln Cathedral. We used to come up to the Cathedral Quarter a lot more in first year, and we spent time reflecting on how easy life was back then and how much has changed including how old we are now. Our legs and feet were aching and it was all we could think about. 21 is OLD people.
We were finally done with being each other's personal photographer, taking advantage of the beautiful day and posing for very candid shots - my favourite style of photography, so we headed home to watch Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and swooned over Orlando Bloom.
Despite what everyone says about how celebrating the day with your significant other is the most special thing about it, it can be just as special spending part of it with a pal too.
