More garden modelling | Flat caps
It's still very much the winter season, given the chilly mornings, freezing afternoons and nippy nights, so it's all about keeping warm. What's better to add an extra bit of style to your outfit than a hat? Recently, I bought two.
Hats have always been fashionable in my opinion. It's the kind of trend that makes a bad hair day okay - whether you couldn't be bothered to wash the mop on your head or if it's just not manageable today, why not whack a hat on to cover the mess. But what about flat caps?
Flat caps are the hype I'm invested in at the moment. Back in May last year, Peaky Blinders inspired a flat cap frenzy. The likes of Idris Elba, Leonardo DiCaprio and John Hamm were all reported to have all sported the look which led to an increase in flat cap sales in John Lewis - but are they still acceptable to wear? Here I am thinking about that.
The flat cap trend definitely has a more masculine vibe to it, particularly demonstrated by the fact that I found both hats that I bought in the men's section of Peacocks. The look unfortunately carries the stigma of being old fashioned, however, and flat caps have been left behind as one of many forgotten styles - except for older men. I saw four men wearing them on the day I bought them in the space of 5 minutes. Maybe that's a sign.
If you're similar to me and wear hats regardless of whether they suit you or not, you'll know that they provide that extra bit of comfort too. You can even wear one inside the house and be snug all day if you're that much a fan. I'll admit it, I have been that girl. I thought I could pull off a top hat I found at my friends' house once, no no. After about 5 hours of wearing it, I looked in the mirror and found that the mirror strongly disagreed.
Flat caps are a great accessory in their own right though - their simple and basic patterns complement most outfits, and you could always don a closely-matched scarf or coat to wear with it out and about. Make sure they don't make your whole outfit look too dated or like an old man though - unless that's your aesthetic, then go right ahead.
These hats will be perfect to wear to lectures for the rest of this season, or any season perhaps. They can have a timeless vibe depending on their style, so I'll make sure to do another post on different styles in the future. The only thing to be wary about is obviously the wind and for me, there's lots of it in Lincoln. Wouldn't want to lose it in the Brayford Pool!
So what are your views on flat caps? Are they in or out of fashion? I'd love to hear what you think.
*Over the next few months it will be my aim to find a more natural and less awkward posing face, but this is all I can offer for now.
